The COSMETIC Chemist (CC) workshop is a component of Karnival Jom Sains 2026 (KJS 2026), designed as an interactive and hands-on session that introduces participants to the science behind cosmetic products. Students will explore basic concepts of formulation, ingredients, safety, and product development while applying STEM knowledge in a practical setting.
Open to secondary school students nationwide, participation is in teams of up to four members. The workshop will be held at the Biology Teaching Laboratory MPB 1 & MPB 2, Laboratory 2, Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, University Putra Malaysia, with three sessions available taking place from 15-16 April 2026. Registration closes on 23 March 2026.
Guided by facilitators, participants will engage in demonstrations, discussions, and simple formulation activities that promote creativity, critical thinking, and scientific understanding. E-certificates and exciting prizes will be awarded, making the workshop both educational and rewarding.
Overall, Cosmetic Chemist (CC) provides a platform to nurture interest in applied science while promoting awareness of safe and informed cosmetic use in daily life.
Soap Making
This activity provides participants with the opportunity to understand the chemical reaction of saponification, where coconut oil reacts with a sodium hydroxide solution to produce soap. Participants will also test the pH of the soap produced to understand the relationship between hydroxide ion concentration and the level of alkalinity.
Lotion Making
This activity gives participants the opportunity to understand the chemical process in which an emulsifier functions to combine oil and water particles, producing a lotion that helps moisturize the skin.
